MEET THE ARTIST

In our latest collaboration, we are thrilled to work with the vibrant and visionary Camille Walala. Known for her bold, geometric patterns and her ability to transform spaces with colour and energy, Camille brings a fresh perspective to the world of baby sensory. In this interview, Camille shares insights into her creative journey, the inspiration behind her designs, and her experience collaborating with Etta Loves.

INSPIRATION:

Camille’s inspiration is deep and varied, drawing from the geometries found in architecture and the optical illusions of art. “I find the geometry found in architecture very inciting. So many shapes to be found!” she explains. Her influences also include the boldness of artists like Bridget Riley, Keith Haring, and Jean Dubuffet, who masterfully use lines and shapes to create impact. Camille’s admiration for these artists is evident in her work, where she expertly plays with form and structure to create designs that are as captivating as they are unique.

AS AN ARTIST:

Her artistic journey began with her studies in textile design at Brighton, but it didn’t stop there. “It took me a while to really hone my practice. It took several years working in the field to adapt my design and style,” she shares. This period of growth allowed her to refine her approach and develop the distinctive style that has made her a sought-after artist worldwide. Camille’s work today is a testament to her dedication and her ability to continually evolve her craft.

COLLECTION INSPIRATION:

For the Etta Loves collaboration, Camille drew inspiration from a mix of iconic art and everyday life. “The initial ideas behind Mono were inspired by the artworks of Mondrian. I love the way he uses balance of grids!” she says. This love for balance and structure is a defining feature of the collection. For the “Shapes” designs, Camille took cues from the geometries she encounters daily - whether in the streets, on buildings, or in the broader urban landscape.

THE WHY:

Camille has long believed that her artwork resonates with children, making a collaboration with Etta Loves a natural fit. “I have always thought my artwork would be suitable for kids! They are always very drawn towards what I do. So for me, it made complete sense to create products that were tailored to stimulate the growth of kids' minds! A perfect match.” The collaboration allowed her to explore how her bold designs could be adapted to support the visual and cognitive development of babies, making art an integral part of their early experiences.

THE PROCESS:

The design process for this collection was both creative and scientific. Camille started by looking at her existing work through a new lens. “The first point was looking at the things I create and dissecting them with the baby experts working with Etta Loves to understand what would work and what would need to be eliminated. It was a really fascinating process,” she explains. This collaboration was not just about creating beautiful designs; it was about ensuring that each pattern was optimised for infant vision and development.

Our latest collaboration is a vibrant blend of art and science, creating products that are as engaging for babies as they are for adults. Camille’s unique ability to see the world through a lens of colour and geometry has resulted in a collection that is not only visually stimulating but also scientifically designed to support your baby’s development.
